
The Commonwealth Games Sevens tournament, one of the biggest success stories and drawcards of the Games since its introduction in 1998, will have to proceed in New Delhi in October without perennial crowd favourites Fiji, who have been banned from this year's tournament. Fiji is currently "suspended" from the Commonwealth following the military coup in Fiji in December in 2006 and despite representations no exemption is being made for their Rugby Sevens team, who are usually seen as the standard bearers for Fijian sport.
"Its out of our hands," said an IRB spokesman today. "It is a geo-political decision taken by the Commonwealth authorities who decide who is eligbile and not for their competition.
