Oz swimmer Rice will Not Attend Delhi Games

Many International athletes have denied to come to Delhi and yet another major blow to the Delhi Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2010 in terms of international participation, three time Olympic gold medallist swimmer, Stephanie Rice has dropped out from the event due to an injury.The ace Australian swimmer has been struggling with a problem in her right shoulder since Mar 2010. She has decided to give the CWG 2010, which kick starts on Oct 3, a miss to undergo a surgery.

The 22-year-old has also been ruled out of the ongoing Pan Pacific Championships in California. She, now, hopes to recover from her injury before the 2012 London Olympics.“It’s very disappointing, the Melbourne Commonwealth Games was a fantastic event to be part of, and for me personally, and I was really looking forward to the colour and excitement of Delhi,” an emotional Rice told the Swimming Australia website.

“To not be able to compete at 100 per cent here at the Pan Pans has been hard enough, but to make the decision to withdraw from the Commonwealth Games has been very difficult. “It’s the right decision long-term though, because the sooner I can get the shoulder looked at properly and have the surgery done, the sooner I can get back in the pool, training at 100 per cent,” added the Beijing gold medallist in the 200 and 400m individual medley, and 4x200m freestyle relay.

Rice adds to the long list of athletes, who have already decided to give the Delhi Games a miss. Earlier, tennis ace, Samantha Stosur decided to skip the tennis debut of Commonwealth Games.Before Stosur, Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt, Olympic champion Victoria Pendleton and World heptathlon champion Jessica Ennis had announced their withdrawal.

New zealand has selected the youngest driver for Driving Squad Gabrielle Armstrong-Scott. She will participate in Commonwealth games Delhi 2010. She is the youngest driver ever in Commonwealth games history.She will be 14 years and 34 days when the Commonwealth Games opens on October 3.

According to the New Zealand Olympic Committee, Armstrong-Scott will represent New Zealand in the 10m platform and 1m springboard competitions., She will wrest the record from gymnast Nikki Jenkins, who won vault gold at the Auckland Games in 1990 when aged 14 years and seven months.

New Zealand Diving High Performance Manager Luvaine McDonald says Armstrong-Scott's selection is significant for diving. “The Commonwealth Games is an elite event in the sport of diving, with Australia, Canada and Malaysia producing some of the world's top divers,” she said. “For a minority New Zealand sport, her selection, resulting from current performance, is significant.”

Queen’s Baton arrives in India for Commonwealth Games

The Queen’s Baton Relay arrived in Delhi (India) from Pakistan. She arrived by road through Wagah Border in Punjab. The Chairman of the Common Wealth games, CWG, Organising Committee Suresh Kalmadi, received the baton from Pakistan Olympic Association President Lt Gen Syed Arif Hassan at the international border. The Commonwealth Games Federation chief Mike Fennell was also present on the occasion.

The QBR,was launched by Queen Elizabeth II at the Buckingham Palace in London in October last year. At that time Indian President Pratibha Patil was also present there. The baton will now travel across India and it will reach Delhi at last after covering 71 nations and territories across the world.

Speaking on the occasion Shri Kalmadi said it’s a great day for sports in India. He said the baton has gone 170,000 kms all around the Commonwealth and we have received it in a very big manner. Following this he passed on the baton to a host of dignitaries including CGF CEO Mike Hooper, Olympic bronze medallist boxer Vijender Singh and four-time world champion woman boxer M C Mary Kom.

Among others who were present at the relay included Punjab Chief Minister Prakash Singh Badal, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and a host of top politicians and bureaucrats.

Fiji banned from Rugby Sevens tournament- CWG 2010

The Commonwealth Games Sevens tournament, one of the biggest success stories and drawcards of the Games since its introduction in 1998, will have to proceed in New Delhi in October without perennial crowd favourites Fiji, who have been banned from this year's tournament. Fiji is currently "suspended" from the Commonwealth following the military coup in Fiji in December in 2006 and despite representations no exemption is being made for their Rugby Sevens team, who are usually seen as the standard bearers for Fijian sport.

"Its out of our hands," said an IRB spokesman today. "It is a geo-political decision taken by the Commonwealth authorities who decide who is eligbile and not for their competition.

MIC Electronics Will Supply LED Screens for CWG 2010

MIC Electronics Limited announced its selection as supplier of LED displays to the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium & the Srifort Stadium for the Common Wealth Games (CWG) 2010 which are to be held from the 3rd of October 2010 to the 14th of October 2010 at New Delhi. The Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium will be the venue for the opening and closing ceremonies of the games.

The contract was awarded to MIC Electronics by Pico Art International Pte Limited (Pico), a leader in brand activation, which is the event management company for the Common Wealth Games 2010.

Delhi 2010 sees chance to emerge as significant sporting nation

The Government of India sees the XIX Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi as an excellent opportunity to herald the country’s emergence as a significant sporting nation and showcase its organisational capacity to host such major events.In its report to the nation presented by Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh on Tuesday, Government said apart from highlighting the important role of sports, promoting closer ties between the people of the Commonwealth countries and promoting tourism, this Commonwealth Games will provide the nation with state-of-art, international standard sports infrastructure.

The report said Government had approved a budget of nearly Rs. 11,494 crore for the successful conduct of the Games through various ministries. (Of this, the budget for the Organising Committee Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi to conduct the Games is Rs 1620 crore). The Commonwealth Games will also result in the upgradation of city infrastructure on an unprecedented scale, it said.

Australia names teenager in Delhi 2010 lawn bowls squad

Natasha van Eldik was on Wednesday named to represent Australia at the Commonwealth Games lawn bowls pairs competition in Delhi in October. At 19, she will become the youngest lawn bowler to wear Australian colours in a Commonwealth Games competition.

She lines up alongside reigning gold medallist, 26-year-old Lynsey Armitage. The pair won the silver medal at the eight-nation tournament at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium lawn bowls facility here in April. That convinced Australian coach Rex Johnston that Van Eldik was ready.

The Commonwealth Games 2010 are the biggest sports events to ever be held in the country. But the CNN-IBN special investigation team finds that the nation's pride could turn into an ecological embarrassment.

The 118 acre Commonwealth Games village is under construction on the floodplains of the Yamuna, in spite of warnings that the construction will endanger lives.

Activist, Yamuna Jiye Abhiyan, Manoj Mishra says, "Any construction, especially a multi-storey construction on the riverbed is an invitation to disaster. It is like a deathtrap."The Yamuna has a history of flooding. It’s the floodplain that acts as a buffer and prevents flooding in populated areas. Construction there would also mean a reduction in groundwater levels, worsening Delhi's drinking water crisis.

Ecologist, MC Mehta informs, "The groundwater situation in Delhi is so critical that some of the blocks in Delhi have been declared as critical areas or dark spots. Saline water has also started coming in because there is no sweet water, so where is the water?"

Adding to that is the fact the Yamuna flood-plains also sit on a seismically active area. Manoj Mishra tells us, “There is a seismic map of Delhi. It's the river bed that sits on the fault line."

Experts say that suggestions for alternative sites such as the unused Safdarjung aerodrome or the already-standing Jasola Sports Complex have been ignored by the Delhi Government.

Hydrology expert, IIT Delhi, Prof AK Gosain says, "There are a lot of possible sites in and around Delhi. I don't think that the concerned authorities have really looked at any of those alternative proposals and sites. On the contrary, they have suggested that the most dangerous one on the floodplains of the Yamuna."

New Zealand names 12 swimmers for Commonwealth Games Delhi 2010

Zealand named a squad of 12 swimmers for the Commonwealth Games at the end of the National Swimming Championships in Auckland last week Seven swimmers successfully met stiff qualification times set by the selection panel while five others were included after a re-evaluation of recent times worldwide.

According to reports in the New Zealand media, Swimming NZ successfully petitioned the New Zealand Commonwealth Games Association to extend the squad to 12. The New Zealand Commonwealth Games team is expected to total about 185 competitors in 18 sports.

Swimming NZ performance and pathways general manager Jan Cameron said the initial qualification targets agreed with the NZOC were set against world times 12 months ago. Since then, times around the world, particularly at the Australian trials last month, had eased back after the controversial rubber swimming suits had been banned.

Delhi police to instal cargo scanners to secure CG games

DELHI POLICE will install cargo scanners to scan the vehicles entering the Games Village during the Commonwealth Games (CG) in another step towards strengthening the security for Commonwealth Games. These cargo scanners will be placed outside the Games Village near Akshardham temple are priced between Rs 15 to Rs 20 crore. A heavy vehicle or truck can be easily passed through it.

These huge scanning machines will ensure no explosives or ammunition can be sneaked into the Games village site by hiding them in a vehicle. Mumbai, Mar 24 (PTI) Laying to rest speculation that the Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2010 budget has overshot, CWG Director General V K Verma today said that the entire estimated cost of the games was Rs 10,000-crore.

"The (speculated) CWG cost is a myth. The entire cost of the Games is Rs 10,000 crore, which is USD 2 billion as compared to the USD 28 billion spent by China during the (Beijing) Olympics," Verma said addressing a gathering at the India International Sports Summit here today.

Out of the Rs 10,000-crore while Rs 2,000-crore will be spent on hospitality, the rest of the money would be spent on building infrastructure like flyovers and stadiums, which is there to last, he said.

Verma said that if India expects to host the Olympics in the near future, they should start laying the platform from now.

The hotel owners have threatened to boycott the CWG, if the government does not offer them any help. This could create a huge crisis as the area has close to 30,000 low-budget hotel rooms, which are a huge hit with backpackers from around the world.

"All we are telling the government is that when they can spend Rs 140 crore to upgrade and renovate the Ashoka Hotel, why can't they help the hotels here, which will be hosting a majority of the visitors to the city," said Arun Gupta, secretary general of the Delhi Hotel

"We are not asking the government to dole out free money, all we want is some subsidy and some low interest loans so that we can carry out renovation, make it aesthetic and upgrade facilities in our hotels," added Gupta

Thirty students from the Sheffield Hallam University in Britain will volunteer for the Commonwealth Games here under an agreement signed Tuesday.

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed by Sheffield Hallam University Vice Chancellor Philip Jones and Commonwealth Games Organising Committee (CGOC) chairman Suresh Kalmadi.The students will be selected from Sheffield Hallam University's media and journalism courses and will be part of a pool of 30,000 volunteers for the October games. They will mainly deal with the media.

The organising committee is planning a state-of-the-art Press Centre and International Broadcasting Centre for more than 5,000 journalists, Kalmadi said.

CGOC's Jiji Thomson told IANS: 'A batch of 30 students from Sheffield had volunteered in the Beijing Olympics and performed commendably. For the Commonwealth Games too, we have students from the university volunteering for us.'

At Beijing, the Sheffield students were the only Europeans among 16,000 volunteers. Sheffield is working in partnership with the London Organising Committee for the 2012 Olympic Games too.

"Australia said the Commonwealth championship did not fit into the training and competition program of its boxers, while Canada said nothing at all," Raja told The Associated Press.
The championships are an official test event for the Commonwealth Games, scheduled for Oct. 3-14 in New Delhi. The event was originally scheduled to be held last year, but was deferred because the venue was among the many Commonwealth Games facilities not ready on construction deadline.
The construction delays have provoked criticism from the Commonwealth Games Federation and caused embarrassment for local organizers, who have promised to get most venues ready by end of this month.

NEW DELHI: The ongoing Commonwealth Shooting Championships have been plagued by embarrassing incidents. Sunday offered its own quota of the bizarre - the Indian 25m rapid fire pistol team won the gold medal even before they got to shoot.

Because, they were the only team competing. Quite unbelievable but true. For the record, Vijay Kumar and Pemba Tamang set a Commonwealth record en route to the 'gold.'

The duo's performance, especially by Vijay Kumar, was excellent as the latter shot a personal best of 588, but the event exposed the level of competition in the Championships. The event had four shooters, three from India and one from Gibraltar - thus making the hosts the only team in fray - as it was a pair event.

70 percent rooms completed for Commonwealth Games

New Delhi,The review of the hotel projects coming up for the Commonwealth Games in the national capital has indicated that 7,307 rooms have been completed, which is 70 percent of the overall 10,540 'Definite' rooms.This was revealed after the 27th meeting of the 'Task Force' constituted for the purpose of monitoring the augmentation of hotel accommodation

The performance of hotel projects of Haryana is commendable as 85 percent of the 6,766 'Definite' rooms have been already completed and efforts are being made to complete the balance rooms as early as possible, Tourism Ministry said in a press release.Several hotels in Haryana are in the process of receiving the completion certificate and are likely to be inaugurated in the coming few months.
The hotel promoters are striving to complete the projects and operationalize the hotels by March 31 in ordered to receive the benefits of the Five Year Tax Holiday announced by the Government for hotels coming up for the Games in the NCR, the press release added.The progress made by all the segments for the overall availability of rooms from the existing hotels, new hotel projects, licensed guest houses, bed and breakfast establishment and DDA housing units located at Vasant Kunj was found to be satisfactory. New Delhi, Feb 15 (IANS) To overcome traffic congestion during the Commonwealth Games, schools in the national capital will remain closed during the mega sporting event, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said Monday.
The Delhi government sent an advisory to Delhi schools, both government and private, to reschedule school holidays for the academic year 2010-11 keeping in view the Commonwealth Games being organised Oct 3-14.

“For smooth hosting of Commonwealth games and to avoid traffic congestion, it has been decided to extend the autumn break from eight to 17 days while summer vacations have been reduced from 61 days to 49 days,” Dikshit told reporters here.

The autumn break will be from Oct 1 to 17.

“The rescheduling of the breaks will not affect the working hours of schools as working days in 2010-11 would be 218 compared to 215 in 2009-10,” she said.

The Delhi Commonwealth Secretariat has quietly launched a special online lottery series hoping to raise over Rs 500 crore to fund the Games. The lottery, or raffle series, launched last week in 12 states, will continue for the next 23 months, said a top official, requesting anonymity. The top prizes could include luxury cars such as Mercedes, gold coins and cash prizes.

Lottery is a state subject, and some states have banned the practice. The CWG panel has written to these states requesting them to make a one-time exception, said another official. “It’s for a good cause,” he said, asking not to be named.

The CWG New Delhi is expected to cost nearly Rs 1,300 crore and is to be funded by a variety of sources including government grants, sponsorships and broadcasting rights. “The idea of the Delhi Commonwealth Raffle took time to implement as several state governments have put a ban on lotteries. But these bans were mainly for paper lotteries of yesteryears. Online lotteries are safe and rigging-proof,” the CWG official said.

The former World No.4, who has not competed since the Beijing Olympics, told TOI here that she will be skipping the whole of 2010 and hopes to return to action early next year. "I wanted to take part and win before my fans in Delhi. But I won't be able to compete due to personal reasons and I have already informed the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) officials," Anju said without revealing the details.
Asked if fans would be able to see her back in action again, as a comeback from a two-and-a-half-year sabbatical is difficult, Anju was very confident about her return. "No way I am quitting the sport as I still feel I can compete in one more Olympics. I'll try and be ready for the London Games in 2012. And If I compete there, I'll surely not go as a spectator. I'm sure with all my experience and with the help of Bobby (husband and coach), I can make a comeback," the 32-year-old Customs officer added.
Anju first hogged the limelight winning the bronze medal in the CWG in 2002 and then in the Busan Asian Games where she clinched the gold. The next year she created history in Paris becoming the first Indian to win a medal (bronze) in the World Athletics championship. In 2005, Anju was again basking in glory after winning the silver in the World Athletics final, an achievement rated by many as the high point of her career.

However, Anju's best performance came in the Athens Olympics when she led the field in the first round after touching down at 6.83 metres. In the end, the Indian couldn't improve further and settled for the sixth place.

Center announces five years tax holiday to hotels completed before March 2010

CHANDIGARH: The Secretary of Tourism of Government of India Sujit Banerjee said that in view of Commonwealth Games the Union Government has decided to give tax holiday for five years to the hotels completing before 31st March this year. This exemption would be given to 2, 3 and 4 Star hotels and not to the 5 Star hotels.

Presently there were about 10 thousand hotel rooms in and around Delhi.

He said that in the remaining 30 thousand hotel rooms, Haryana was making a commendable contribution of 6700 rooms. At this, the Gurgaon Deputy Commissioner Rajender Kataria, who is also the nodal officer for Tourism related projects and beautification of roads in districts of Haryana falling in NCR, assured the Tourism Secretary to provide about 7000 rooms. Hearing this assurance, Mr Banerjee said ‘Haryana is number one’.

He said that DDA was going to provide 2300 rooms and UP would provide 2000 rooms. In addition to these, about 11 thousand hotel rooms would be available from guest houses at Paharganj and Karol Bagh of Delhi. About 3000 rooms would be available from bed and breakfast scheme in Delhi and Haryana. He said that about 5000 rooms would be made available from the flats being developed by DDA at Vasant Kunj. The Indian Tourism Development Corporation would take these flats from DDA before auction and make them 3 star quality rooms. Even after this if more rooms were required, the shortage would be met out from the two tentage sites-Suraj kund and Dundhahera in Haryana. At these two places tents with 5 star facilities would be erected in five – five acres of land.

Banerjee said that during the Commonwealth Games the tourist vehicles would have facility of seamless travel in the golden triangle area which includes Dehli, Haryana, UP and Rajasthan. The tourists vehicles would be able to pay all the toll taxes in Delhi itself, after which they would be given a sticker with hologram of Ministry of Tourism. This would enable them to travel without any hindrance. Replying to a question, he said that separate task forces have been constituted for traffic, security and beautification. He said that he would soon be having a review of preparations at Agra and Jaipur also.

The Organising Committee Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi has launched the first phase of tickets sales to all Commonwealth Games Associations (CGAs); the Ticket Order Form inclusive of prices has been mailed to the CGAs.

The CGAs will have three opportunities of purchase:

* First Phase - Purchase period commencing
15 November 2009 - 15 January 2010
* Second Phase - Purchase opportunity from
15 January 2010 - 31 March 2010
* Ongoing from the May 2010 up to and during the Games

Tickets for General Public

Tickets for the XIX Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi will be on sale in May 2010 and 1.7 million tickets will be available. Tickets are subject to availability, and will remain on sale until the start of each event.

We will be launching our ticket-sales programme in April 2010.This will give registered supporters a chance to receive ticketing news and information. Please visit our website regularly for updates.

We aim to give as many people as possible the chance to attend the Games, ensuring a great atmosphere for all the events.
